Scheels Hometown Hero – Dennis Maresh

Dennis Maresh served in the United States Marine Corp from October of 1966-1970 and earned the Rank of Sgt E-5. He enlisted in the Marines October 12, 1966 and attended basic training in San Diego.

He served four months at Camp Lejune in North Carolina. After leaving Camp Lujene, he entered the Vietnam Conflict and served in the communications sections from October of 1967-June of 1969. Denny’s final base station until he discharged from the Marine Corp was in Yuma Arizona. While enlisted in the Marines, he served during the Vietnam Conflict and earned a Combat Action Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Rifle Marksmanship Badge, the USMC Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal.

Dennis “Denny” now resides in Valley City, ND. He recently retired from working at the Barnes County Veterans Service Office where he drove the Veterans Transport Van 7 days a week to take veterans to medical appointments in Fargo, Minneapolis, and South Dakota. It was not uncommon for Denny to make multiple trips in a single day. He never took a day off, he always had his cell phone ready in the event a veteran needed him and often times gave up family holidays to help veterans in need.
