SCHEELS HOMETOWN HERO ✪ MONICA DORSEY

 In Hometown Heroes

Please join us in celebrating and honoring Officer Monica Dorsey as the next Scheels Hometown Hero!! Officer Dorsey, a seven-year veteran of the Springfield Police Department, currently serves as a Neighborhood Police Officer for Beat 100 in Springfield. Officer Dorsey is an instrumental figure in fostering Community Engagement throughout the Springfield area.

Officer Dorsey is passionate about working to give back to the communities most vulnerable. One of her most notable contributions is the creation of the local Books & Badges program in partnership with the Starfish Assignment. This program connects law enforcement officers with elementary school students to promote literacy and strengthen relationships within the community. During each Books & Badges event, an officer reads a book to the students, and every child receives a copy of the book, generously provided by Starfish Assignment. Each book includes a special bookplate sticker indicating it is a gift from their law enforcement friends.

Under Officer Dorsey’s leadership, the Books & Badges program has flourished in collaboration with District 186. In 2023, she and her team visited local kindergarten classrooms, read stories, engaged students in craft projects related to the books, and fostered positive interactions. Over 300 children received books to take home. This school year, the program is set to visit additional classrooms, distributing 600 books in total for the 24-25 school year.

In addition to her work with children, Officer Dorsey serves as the department’s Senior Services Officer. She is always willing to assist seniors and works closely with the Senior Service Center and the Sangamon County Triad group to ensure that seniors in the community receive the support and resources they need.

Beyond Books & Badges and her work with seniors, Officer Dorsey has been a vital part of the department’s partnership with Compass for Kids, regularly visiting after-school programs. She has also assisted Officer Leach in planning and executing the annual Cops & Bobbers event, where 75 children spend a day fishing alongside officers each fall.

While her efforts in community engagement have brought immeasurable positivity to Springfield, Officer Dorsey remains deeply committed to providing exceptional service within her assigned beat. Her dedication ensures that her community thrives in peace and harmony.

Officer Monica Dorsey’s tireless work, compassion, and unwavering dedication to building a stronger, more connected community exemplify what it means to be a true Scheels Hometown Hero.
