John was born in Minneapolis, raised in Princeton, Minnesota, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school in 1981. He served with 2nd Radio Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC, and deployed into two combat environments, earning accolades like the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon before his honorable discharge in June 1985.

John served 27 years in law enforcement at state and federal levels, including postings in Yankton, SD, Chicago, Fargo, FBIHQ’s Counterterrorism Division, and the US Embassies in Beirut and Kabul. He also deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the FBI’s embed program with the Department of Defense.

John has been involved with the Brady Oberg Legacy Foundation since 2017. In 2018, he created Brady’s Border2Border Ruck March and in 2019 he was named an Ambassador for the Foundation. From 2018 to 2023, the Border2Border Ruck March rucked 1350 miles and raised over $200,000 for veteran PTSD awareness and the elimination of veteran suicide.
